Frederick Ernest Pitchford, Age 18

Frederick was the son of Noah and Florence and had been born in Dawley in Oct 1899 and baptised on 3rd Jan 1900 at Dawley. living in King Street according to the 1901 census. The family then moved to Nuneaton first living at No. 23 Stanley Street and then 138 Elmsdale Ave, Foleshill, Nuneaton by the time Frederick was called up for service.

At the time of his call up the British government had brought in conscription (1916) and men were sent to regiments that required reinforcing, rather than joining local regiments as they had tended to do early in the war.

By late 1918 the Allies were pushing the Germans back towards ultimate defeat and Frederick fell in action on the 24th September 1918 and lies in the Lebuquiere communal cemetery in grave II.H.27
